Book Description

Who knew what the wide-mouthed seven-year-old you see before you would go on to encounter as an adult? Can any of us be fully prepared for the life that we are to embark upon? How much of this is in our control or predestined? This is not just one woman’s story of how she arrived at 50, at a crossroads which proved crucial. It is your story too.If you have ever experienced any form of battle with mental health, physical illness, trauma or relationships, then this book is yours too.It is quite simply a story of how love can prevail, how labour must not define or crush us and how loss can be a catalyst for change. This is a book ‘half full’, not a book ‘half empty’, and offers to be your friend as you travel on your own journey.

Joanna Greaves wanted to write at 18. At 51, it happened. She picked up her pen to write her mum’s eulogy and was encouraged by the same English teacher she had at 16, who said, “You have to keep writing!” So indeed she has!

At this turning point of her life, she ‘closed the curtain’ on a 29-year teaching career to commit herself to achieving her lifetime’s ambition. Attending a short 6-hour writing course, then establishing with a friend her own writing group, which she leads weekly in her hometown of Belper, Derbyshire, has allowed her to find her written voice once more.

Her aim is to reach readers who have similar life experiences and wish to read a message of hope and renewal, and also to support the younger versions of herself who may be fighting those same battles and need a glimmer of hope, a sprinkle of joy and a burst of optimism.

Loved this heartfelt and uplifting read! Every chapter - or ‘episode’ as the author calls them - relates to a different part of Joanna’s life, and speaks to a different part of the reader as a consequence. Topics range widely and are shared with humour and relatability. Particular favourite chapters were Those Who Walk by Your Side on the Path (about friendship); Nature’s Voice (symbolism in nature); and The Life of a Duracell Bunny (a look at a later-in-life ADHD diagnosis). A great memoir of loss, hope and renewal.

For saying this is Joanna's first published book it is thought provoking and sensitively written about so many different aspects of life that we all may experience in one way or another. You definitely find yourself resonating with the words on the page which are perfectly formed and finds you wanting to read another chapter. A particular favourite chapter is 'Those who walk by your side on the path' as this rings true for many different friendships over the years and I could easily fit people into the differing seasons. A great analogy! Looking forward to her next book....

Jo's writing is so honest and thought provoking, you know her written words are not only healing herself but also the reader. A warm hug in a book, a reminder that feeling deeply is good and trauma doesn't have to define you and you can come through the other side. I enjoyed every chapter. Massive well done Jo, you have achieved your dream and I couldn't be prouder xx

An enjoyable read about the ups and downs of Jo’s life and how we can all resonate with her stories. It is fun but also gives an insight into Mental Health and Grief which readers may find enlightening. I thoroughly recommend!

I thoroughly enjoyed this beautifully written book; the highs, the lows, the honesty, the relatability. How wonderful to get your life’s journey down on paper. Makes you think about your own life’s journey, and the future, with hope and positivity. Great book.

I am sure that many readers will connect with this book, as I did, & find more than one chapter relatable to our lives. Even if it's not in the same context. Sad at times, but not a gloomy read. It's extremely heartfelt & compelling, drawing me in, unable to put it down. Thank you for your story Jo, keep writing

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book...what I got was a warm, honest and authentic story full of hope, love and laughter shining out from the some difficult experiences. This book was so relatable and will stay with me for a long time. A truly great debut book
