Book Description

Maria has spent over forty years as a dedicated nurse, helping children and adults with learning disabilities reach their full potential. Her career in psychiatry was not just about caring for others, but also about learning to extend that care to herself.

Maria’s journey took her from Ireland to Australia and Saudi Arabia. She lovingly cared for premature babies, unaware that she would later have a premature baby of her own in her forties.

At its core, this book is about Maria’s quest to be seen and loved, ultimately discovering that she needed to see and love herself first. Despite confronting bullying, loss, divorce, illness, and grief through countless nursing courses, Maria lived and worked in an unconscious environment.

Her journey towards consciousness was transformative, awakening her to the power and authenticity of understanding her own story. Embracing her true self without judgment became her path forward.

This is Maria’s story – a truly inspirational account of navigating from a large family to living her one true life, overcoming emotional struggles along the way.

Maria Burke has devoted most of her life to nursing, starting her career at seventeen. With expertise in five modalities of nursing, she now serves as a public health nurse in Ireland, akin to a health visitor in the UK. Reflecting on her varied experiences, Maria realises that the most crucial relationship she could have was the one she had with herself. By starting on a conscious journey in 2014, Maria realised that examining her story brought what was unconscious to consciousness. Through this long and harrowing journey of self-discovery, Maria came to the astounding realisation that the nursing that was needed was the nursing of herself.
