Book Description
This story is part fact and part fiction is first of all about Edward Watkins who was born in 1903 and placed by his unfortunate sex slave mother into the care of the brutal environment of the workhouse in Crumpsall Manchester at a time when the government did nothing either medical or financial for the poverty stricken.
He left the workhouse at the age of 16 and was generously assisted into a better life by two excellent people.
When walking along one of the main streets in Manchester, he came across the Royal Marines Recruiting Office and saw his first opportunity to become self-dependent, although to join at that stage he falsely added a year to his age.
During one of his initial training exercises, he met up with Samuel Baldwin, and they immediately recognised each other from their workhouse days.
The story is about their mutual and lasting friendship during their time travelling the world as marines during peacetime, creating harmony wherever they went, and later their traumatic wartime experiences.
It also covers their marriages, children and later peacetime activities.
