Book Description

The Balance of Light is a true story of a young troubled youth who was on a pathway of destruction driven by hate and unforgiveness. Growing up in a neighbourhood where running from the police was the norm, he was expelled from school. Unable to let go of the past, he was on a runaway train, heading for a dark future.

Until one afternoon, a friend met him at the local junk car yard and shared some red wine and communion altar bread he had stolen from a local church. Unknown to Glen, this was his first communion.

Soon after, Glen had what could only be described as a spiritual encounter. It instantly released the built-up hate and pain he had carried with him his whole life. Along with this event, he had dreams he couldn’t explain at the time—dreams that would later come true.

The pain and darkness inside had shifted. In their place came peace, understanding, and purpose. Glen calls this “light shifting”—replacing the darkness caused by negative events with light, peace, power, and purpose.

The Balance of Light takes you on a powerful journey. It is a transformational memoir that weaves personal storytelling, spiritual awakening, and community empowerment into one compelling narrative.

Glen went from running from police to being escorted into Government House by police, receiving a Queen’s Medal for helping youth nationally. His work has empowered communities across New Zealand and is now having powerful positive effects internationally.

With a basketball and the ability to light shift, Glen shares his journey. He opens up about his time in the New Zealand Police and his internal conflict—arresting young people who were just like him. Then he shares what he did about it, bringing powerful community breakthroughs and practical life empowerment strategies.

Glen wrote this book for his children and his family. He believes there is more to life than the darkness and negativity being pushed out—influencing our actions and shaping who we become. He asks, “Are we the best we can be?”

Let’s walk in the Balance of Light.

Glen Green was a troubled youth, on a pathway of destruction driven by hate and unforgiveness, growing up in a neighbourhood where running from the police was the norm. He was expelled from school, and unable to let go of the past, he was on a runaway train heading toward a dark future.

Glen shifted from a life defined by anger and distrust of authority to being a Policeman, and to eventually becoming one of New Zealand’s most respected police officers and community leaders. He was awarded the Queen’s Medal for my work with youth in New Zealand and was subsequently appointed (MNZOM), a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

As an Auckland-based Pakeha writer who grew up alongside Māori and Pacific Island communities, those experiences heavily inspire the authentic cultural textures of his narrative.

This is part memoir, part personal transformation, and part social commentary. The Balance of Light is set against the backdrop of Aotearoa New Zealand—a nation grappling with systemic inequality, racial division, poverty, and the growing influence of gang culture.
