Who Am I?

Hi! My name is Eleanor Ramsell, and I’m currently a midwifery intern.

I have written this book for anyone considering a profession in midwifery and any students currently studying midwifery in Ireland.

When I was a student, I couldn’t find any books that were only for Irish student midwives.

The only books I could find were all only relevant to the English and American maternity systems.

The information available in these books are not specific to us as Irish midwives, and therefore I had to go and do additional research as I was training.

There are many differences between the Irish system and the systems in other countries.

We have a different university application process, different EU regulations and midwifery related issues specific to Ireland. We have a different autonomy here in Ireland and we have different structures and provisions of healthcare services.

However, now that I am in my internship, I feel I have acquired the knowledge that I feel would have been helpful when I was starting out. I have compiled what I think would be useful as an Irish midwifery student starting out into this book.

This book will include a variety of information. This includes information about different placements, what to expect from each placement, how to correctly fill out your books, general information about each of the core placements, relevant Irish organisations in healthcare and skills and tables outlining helpful tips.

Being a midwife is such a privilege and being able to train in Ireland is an amazing opportunity.

I hope you enjoy this book and that it helps you on your journey to becoming a qualified midwife!
