Book Description

Seemingly abandoned as a child, King Julian struggled from the very start of his reign. Many believed he was an imposter behind that dreaded mask, unworthy of his mother’s throne. Over the years, however, he crushed rebellions and riots, silenced lies and slander, and brought the entire north of Varrya under his rule. This was a remarkable feat, given the torment he endured in his youth.

But now, the fragile peace he forged has been tainted. Ancient foes, masters of manipulation and deceit, threaten to tear his realm apart.

The tale begins here, on the brink of war with an enemy unlike anything Julian, or indeed anyone else, has ever faced. The Skahl, bringers of death and malice, have landed in force, leaving Julian with a desperate choice: rally his people and fight or bow to survive.

Martin Hadfield is a young man from Bolton, Lancashire, with quite a story to tell. As a child, he disliked the feel of a pen in his hand and avoided writing whenever possible. That all changed a few years ago when he set himself a personal challenge: to write a book for his grandfather, an avid reader. He spent countless days and nights crafting a universe from his imagination—writing, revising and starting over time and again.

This book, The King Behind the Golden Mask, became Martin’s saving grace after his grandfather passed away on July 16th, 2020. His grandfather had always encouraged him to finish the story so he could read it, but sadly, that moment never came. Since then, Martin made it his mission not only to complete the book his grandfather once longed to read, but to expand and enrich the universe he created in his memory.
