Book Description

Afghan women possess remarkable strength and resilience, often underestimated by the public. They take on many important roles within their families and communities. As wives, mothers, and the backbone of their families, these women carry responsibilities at home and at work while resisting restrictive cultural and social norms, yet they continue to pursue their ambitions with unwavering determination.

The Landless Girls reveals the journeys of 12 Afghan women who faced formidable challenges after migrating to countries including Afghanistan, Australia, Canada, Finland, Germany, Iran, Pakistan, and the UK. These women overcame cultural and language barriers while fighting for education and independence. Their perseverance amidst adversity showcases extraordinary courage and growth. The book seeks to encourage readers by illustrating how women can transform hardships into strength and self-belief, ultimately envisioning a world where every girl learns fearlessly and every woman lives with dignity and freedom.

The Landless Girls was written by twelve educated Afghan women now living across the world from Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan to the UK, Germany, Australia, Finland and Canada. They hold degrees in Nursing, Physics, Management, Environmental Health Engineering, Chemistry, Law, Accounting, Teacher Training, Medicine and Persian Literature.

Today, these women work in a wide range of distinguished professions across the globe. They are School principals in Pakistan and Iran (Fatemeh Masoumi; Fatemeh Sajjadi); a Health researcher and immigrant advocate in Germany (Ommolbanin Mirzaie); a Senior lecturer in the United Kingdom (Rana Amiri); a PhD candidate in Finland (Rubaba Mohammadi); a Nursery teacher in Australia (Zahra Halimi); a Medical physicist in the United Kingdom (Shakardokht Jafari); an Otolaryngologist working between Afghanistan and Iran (Sharifeh Haghjoo); a Nurse in Canada (Zahra T.); a Teacher in Canada (Rugiyah Masoumi); and a Case manager supporting refugees in Australia (Zainab Sajjadi).

Together, they have challenged gender inequality and navigated the trials of migration, transforming every obstacle into an opportunity for growth. Their stories reflect the courage and resilience of Afghan women who persist in their pursuit of knowledge, dignity, and belonging.
