Book Description

This literary piece covers three periods: slavery until 1868, the War of Independence (1868-1898), and changes (1898- ). The major part of the events takes place in the eastern regions of Cuba. It tells true stories of members of the same family, portrayed succinctly yet illustratively, with the protagonists’ time periods and attitudes taking centre stage.

The whole story is told by one member of the third generation. Each generation of protagonists put into practice what they learnt from the previous one, showing a common pattern – the highest moral standard in the time in which they lived.

They are, then, three generations of the same family who neither lacked resources nor humility, and the poverty in which they lived could not drag them down to the lowest point. Instead, they rose to the top and faced the most serious challenges to maintain their morale at the highest level – something more worthy of admiration and respect than praise, considering we are talking about a society where being poor and Black, and naturally, dispossessed, makes you an easy target to become an outcast.

Leonides Batista Vidal finished the Teaching School “Tarará” in Havana, Cuba, in 1970. Then, in 1973, he entered the Superior Institute Lenin in Moscow. He got a diploma with an ‘A’ level and a master’s degree in Russian literature and special teaching.

Back in Cuba in 1978, he worked for the Ministry of Education as a methodologist in that field. He graduated in English literature from the Superior Language School in Havana.

He taught the Russian language and the English language with special purposes at both Havana Agricultural University and Havana University. He was part of the team that wrote ‘Teaching English in the World of Peace,’ teaching material they used in lessons, sponsored by McGill University of Canada in 1996.

He has written two books, Three Unbeatable Stories (2020) and Fullness of Life (2024).
