I genuinely think that more books like this should be written! When Walter was a boy, he didn’t set out to be a Valuation Surveyor. Perhaps the majority of people end up in jobs that they had never predicted. This is a story, first of all, of how both making our way to the best of our ability as well as taking our opportunities can lead us into a work career that is interesting. There is no harm that those beginning working life get a genuine picture of how their lives might pan out. Walter ended up meeting people as diverse as Miss Great Britain, the Royal Family, and future Knights of the Realm. There are some interesting highlights. Family life, illness and redundancy are also woven into this tapestry: they are the threads in every life. Quite deliberately, Walter has also written a social history of England from the decline of the great mining and manufacturing industries to the building of new towns and a revolution in shopping centres. One gets a sense of how ordinary people can be part of something bigger. We understand the story of our lives as part of the decades of history we have experienced. Finally, there is real local interest in this book. There are many things that those living in the North-West take for granted, like Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet or the chain of local Cooperative Stores. Here are back stories that perhaps never occurred to you. There is also an insight into how realistically things get done: not based on fixed ideas belonging to one camp or another, but with ordinary people making a living having the vision and working together.
