John’s career at Thorn EMI Electronics started in design and trials with UK Military and Defence at home and to over 100 territories globally. He became Manager of International Sales & Marketing Asia and Pacific region, later managing Thorn EMI Electronics’ corporate activities in Riyadh, residing in Saudi Arabia for several years. After senior positions in the defence industry, John’s career moved into fire and security systems becoming managing director of UTC Fire Safety Middle East based in Dubai, responsible for group business in the Middle East, Central Europe, North Africa, Central Asia, Russia and the CIS. He led a successful and motivated international team – some dedicated fishermen amongst them.

Reflections is a compilation of poems, both introspective and retrospective, presenting a rich tapestry of personally intimate, spiritual, and worldly issues, across a broad spectrum of environmental, political, and social themes, which mirror the deep concerns and topics of today’s virulent social fabric. Grappling with the themes of the aged, death, loneliness, and the perpetual human quest for answers, they nevertheless maintain an underlying spark of ‘hope and faith’ for the continuance of human existence.

Reflections of My Life

Living in a quiet corner of rural Northern Ireland in the 50s and 60s, children had an idyllic freedom to explore plus a healthy respect for hard work and community spirit. Moving from this, to the bustle and confusion of London, enjoying a short spell living in historic Bath to then living in the Far East, was in itself a lifetime experience.

But follow this on with a broken marriage, a protracted divorce and the harsh realities of living with the ‘troubles’ in Northern Ireland, was a route not experienced by everyone.

Starting again, in the hitherto unknown world of a ‘word smith’ in Public Relations, which included working across the UK, Europe, Bosnia (during and post-conflict) and in Kosovo (post-conflict), was a new route. This process was an accidental rather than a deliberate choice. It flowed out of necessity, drawn by instinctive reaction to circumstances rather than by design.

These experiences form the basis of this narrative.                 

Reflections on Divinity

This book is an original, non-denominational approach to the concept of divinity. The basic underlying philosophy is that, since the existence of God cannot be proven, one can only hypothesize about his/her/its existence. Mystics claim to know God through direct experience. Their views are amply represented. In conclusion, a hypothesis of divinity is formulated, inspired by the mystical view of the omnipresence of the Divine.   

Reflections On El Camino

‘El Camino’ is the pilgrim’s route across northern Spain to reach the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela. This was built on the site where the body of the disciple St James was buried after he was martyred in Jerusalem in 44AD. His remains lay unmarked and unknown for eight centuries until a miraculous light led a shepherd to discover the bones in a cave. A cathedral was built over the spot where the bones were found and it became one of the prime destinations for pilgrims in the medieval era. But the way to Santiago de Compostela was fraught with danger for those pilgrims, with the notoriously bad weather in the Pyrenees, warring kingdoms in the north, civil war and the ever-present danger of invasion from the Muslim Moors who controlled the southern half of the Iberian Peninsula.

This book is a long-distance trek through the countryside, culture and history of the area: from St Jean Pied de Port on the French side of the Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela, then onwards to the Atlantic coast of Spain, and finally to Finisterre – or ‘the end of the world’, as it was known in the times of the Roman Empire. It is a journey of over 900 kilometres. But what is the route like today for the modern pilgrim?

Refugee

Refugee is the final exciting novel in The Sloping Meadow trilogy. This time the principal storyteller is Mahir, a 13 year-old boy who has no choice but to start out on an epic journey from war-torn Syria to try and help his mum and little brother.

In this gripping adventure, he has a series of escapades, including a fight with a large brown bear in Slovenia, and is constantly either greatly helped or really mistreated by the people he meets.

Lucy and her friends find him in Antalya, in the Temple of Apollo, the worse for wear. They agree to help him escape to Northern France with a very daring plan that carries a lot of risks…

This illustrated novel has a non-stop, action-packed story, including insights from others featured as storytellers commenting on war and what it means to be a refugee. It carries a very important message for all who read it and their outlook on war and refugees will change forever.

Reichsburger Resurgence

The Reichsbürger Movement (Citizens of the Reich) have been gaining momentum in Germany for some time. This was witnessed by us all in December 2022 when German Polizei raided several locations arresting leading figures within the country including an aristocrat, a member of parliament and military figures to name but a few. Almost half of arrests took place in the southern states of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. The Movement’s strategy was to overthrow the current federal government and replace it using violence if necessary.

“Reichsbürger Resurgence” commences slightly earlier in September / October 2022, as investigations initially focussing on a diamond smuggling operation soon progress into a credible threat of international consequence. It becomes apparent the Reichsbürger Movement have a sophisticated operation deep in the hills of Bavaria which following decades of planning as far back as WW2 is only days away from full implementation to not simply overthrow the Federal government but world domination their ultimate goal.

The efforts of a small group of individuals faced with the task of preventing the success of the Reichsbürger plot is told here and just perhaps some of the information gleaned from these events aid the authorities in the near future. Fact can indeed be stranger than fiction at times!
