On the French Riviera, summer was approaching, and Mary-Anne Walton was due back in Cannes. I could hardly wait!

Ahead lay an uncomplicated sensuous summer with Mary-Anne. However, suspect property developer Paul Villan; a Thai kick-boxer; a Swiss starlet; and meddlesome international lawyers had other ideas.

The main characters of this novel are both police officers: one is a senior female officer with a very privileged background, while the second eschews promotion and is satisfied with his lot, despite his privileged background.
The book takes its cue from the machinations within the police of the early 1960s, when policing still adhered to the pro-active principles of the Peel Doctrine: all the minutiae of inter-rank and inter-departmental rivalries are brought to light. The novel covers serious crimes like murder and treason, as well as the rivalries between departments of state and a city and county police force.
The solving of crimes is left to the female officer; she has to fight not only criminals but some senior officers who seem to be doing their best to undermine her. On the other hand, there are others who wish to enhance her prospects for high office.
Her investigations lead her to an unconventional address where she makes a breakthrough in her enquiries; this also brings a whiff of romance into the novel. Through the convolutions of the final chapters, successes or failures in both police work and romance are revealed.
Following the tumultuous few months of courtship, Yvonne and Ricard settle in to enjoy their honeymoon in the English New Forest, when an unexpected phone call sends them into a tailspin and drags them and his parents back to their farm in France, where they are greeted by the police to find things are not as they’d left them.
How much of what is revealed to the police during their investigations is true? And where are the red herrings leading everyone?
During the inquiries which continue during the ensuing weeks, insights into the personal lives of the characters are opened up; while adapting to her new role as wife and step-mother, Yvonne begins to discover some truths that throw her off course, making her doubt everything she has known and come to love about Ricard; Ricard discovers events he never knew about his parents and tries to overcome his constant jealous streak which has plagued their relationship for years and his and Yvonne’s from the time they first met.
