A Holistic Treatise On Overpopulation
Rising world population is often mentioned as a key factor impacting the environment. But there is more to a rising world population.
A Holistic Treatise on Overpopulation is shining a light on overpopulation from all possible angles: environmental impacts, a critical review of food and resource security, quality of life, rising inequality, migration, developmental problems of large families, cultural bias, affordability of longevity, rights and ethics. The book is addressing problems in both the developed and developing world. The world needs a coherent ethical and legal framework to limit the fertility rate to no more than two children per woman. This should first start in the developed world, by introducing a tax for people who want more than two children, progressive with the number of children and income, to prevent rich people from showing off with large trophy families.

A Journey of Choice
‘My father had one career his entire life; I have a wonderful life divided over a variety of interesting careers. Life, I would argue, is indeed a journey of choice.’
The author of A Journey of Choice, Hein Scheffer, was born in South Africa in the 1960s and lived there for over forty years before emigrating to the UK with his wife. The story of his personal life is intermingled with depictions of the memorable events from that period, as well as a wide-ranging and well-researched description of his native country’s tortuous, 350-plus-year history.
Hein was witness to many seismic changes to South Africa, including the perpetuation of an Apartheid regime in the face of sustained international condemnation and the rise of anti-Apartheid resistance movements, some of which pursued violent methods. Perhaps most significant has been the country’s emergence as ‘the rainbow nation’, which arguably began in 1990 with the release of Nelson Mandela from his long imprisonment on Robben Island.
There have been many books written about South Africa’s recent history. What you get in A Journey of Choice is the unusual perspective of a middle-class Afrikaner born into a well-respected, God-fearing and conservative family, whose personal relationships gradually led him to question the foundations on which the entire life and culture of his family were based. Hein Scheffer shows us how he grew to understand that the only way South Africa could achieve its full potential would be for all South Africans, irrespective of the colour of their skin, to be treated equally before the law, with mutual respect, dignity and opportunity for all in even measure.
Candid and self-reflective, A Journey of Choice depicts the struggles and successes of an ordinary man in extraordinary times.

A Kiss of Smoke
This book hosts a compendium of my favourite recipes which can be cooked outdoors on a barbecue or using traditional indoor kitchen methods. In this book you will find good, honest cooking; meals that you will love to eat and love to serve to family and friends. None of the photography has been staged, every photo was taken just before the food was eaten, so again there is honesty in the way it is presented.
Most of the recipes are cooked using the more gentle, indirect barbecue method, positioning food away from the fire, thus reducing the risk of creating a bitter flavour caused by over-charring or burning.
So, whether you want to cook outside on your barbecue or indoors in your kitchen, there will be something in this book for you. I hope you enjoy recreating some of these recipes as much as I have enjoyed sharing them with you.

A Midwife's Memoir
Following a long career as a midwife and then a community midwife, Carol retired in 2016, but she found she missed the excitement of bringing new life into the world, the joy and fulfillment of helping mothers to be, and the sheer pleasure of working in a small community.
She decided to record her experiences in this book as a tribute to all the wonderful mums and dads she gave help and advice to; some of the highs and lows, amusing and sometimes heart-breaking stories, and the unusual and unexpected events that occurred during that long career.

A Mile in My Shoes
Life is like a bus ride, people get on and off the bus throughout your life, some stay the whole journey and some just stay a short distance. Unfortunately, the first people to get off my bus were my parents! And I was only five! So my troubles in life started with abandonment, and then built up after a series of events which caused me to fall short on being a model student, an achiever, or an academic. Yet, somehow, I shone through and became an overseas resort controller for UK’s second largest tour operator by being reasonably competent in four languages.
I spent 11 years abroad running away from family tragedies and the decline of our family.
Then therapy, my saviour, with all of its revelations. The therapist knew what my troubles were before I met her, from my medical records. My story is a prime example of how uncaring parents can mess up a child’s life and how the effect can stay with the child for life. I am 63 now and still have to switch the TV over if there is any interaction between father and son.
It’s a bumpy ride, readers! But I am sure you will find it an enjoyable one.

A New Introduction to The Bible
During his years of public ministry the author came to realise that the Bible was a closed book to the majority of people, whilst those who did read it were often confused by the apparent complexity of the work. This book sets out to demystify the Bible, setting each part in its historical, political and religious context, demonstrating that it is a record of the way in which God has made Himself known to succeeding generations. Being not several books so much as a series of narratives progressively disclosing the nature of God and His relationship with us.

A Perforation
For many years after leaving the army, and because of unlucky situations which arose during my service and afterwards, I firmly believe that I was shadowed by what they term “Covert Investigators”. When one left, another took over; but during that time, I was too naive to grasp the situation. I just believed that I was living a charmed life.

A Question of Belief
Belief is rarely pure and never simple. This book explores the particular perplexities of belief as experienced by one female vicar in the Church of England. To exercise a public and representational role within any faith community will always bring its own pressures and paradoxes. Here, the author acknowledges and explores her own questions, which cover a wide range of topics from politics to preaching; from science to suffering. A constant theme of the book is the relationship between fact and truth. Fact is, of course, an important vehicle of truth, but not the only one. Symbolism, metaphor, myth, the creative arts have all conveyed the deep truths of Christianity to the author, who remains totally committed to her faith. Perhaps unsurprisingly, however, she takes a non-literalist view of belief, which she accepts will not be shared by some fellow Christians. But in her experience and understanding, to follow Christ means to seek the eternal truth which he embodied, and which will always be more elusive and intriguing than a recital of fact. And – for the author at least – more joy-giving. This is a hopeful book!

A Story of Hope and Happiness
This is a story of triumph over adversity – an absorbing, thought-provoking, sometimes amusing but often heart-rending account of British businesswoman Rosemary Bidwell’s struggles to set up and run an orphanage in Sierra Leone, West Africa, for orphaned street children – youngsters whose parents had been savagely killed in a truly awful civil war.
Read how, against seemingly insurmountable odds, Rosemary founded the Cotton Tree Children’s Trust charity in 2006 and set about raising thousands of pounds through donations, sponsorship, talks and myriad fund-raising events to give 20 African children a second chance in life.
Through her charity, Rosemary provided her charges not only with a roof over their heads, regular meals, clothing and general welfare and educational support, but love and affection.
Read, too, how Rosemary had to overcome all manner of obstacles on the way to achieving her goal: everything from corruption, bribery, fraud and interrogation by police for 11 hours without diplomatic representation to being falsely accused of child trafficking and suffering a suspected heart attack and having to be airlifted home.
Despite the trials and tribulations, Rosemary has overcome the many and varied setbacks she encountered over a period of 18 years. Today, thanks to her dedication, perseverance and Christian beliefs, the Cotton Tree children can now face the future with confidence and know that they have been given an opportunity to prosper in life that, sadly, has been denied to so many other Sierra Leone children.
