Black History Month UK: Stories of Identity, Culture and African Heritage

October is a special period when it comes to the commemoration of 100 years of Black History Month. The culture, identity, accomplishments and the experience of the people that define the community across the globe should be reflected upon. Books provide one of the best means to do that. Stories through poetry, fiction, biographies, history and visions of the future can allow people to better understand the experiences of others who are not like them.

But who started Black History month? what is Black History month all about? and why Black History Month matters? The Negro History Week was established by Dr. Carter G. Woodson on February 7th, 1926, which became known as Black History Month in 1976. In essence, this is an occasion to celebrate Black achievements, commemorate hard histories, honour cultural heritage and provide a voice for those who should be listened to.

On Black History month UK here are some interesting books.

Coven of the Pyramid Mountains

In ‘Coven of the Pyramid Mountains’, life experiences of women from various ethnicities, cultures, backgrounds are depicted. They form a rather unique community of women living in a confined space in a cave.

Among the women there are those born to wealthy families and those whose life is nomadic. In such a diverse community with such distinct individuals, disagreements in sharing leadership roles are bound to arise.

In this story, the mystic realm is explored where the world of humans coexists with that of spirits. The spirit-humans and human-spirits provide the reader with a blend of mortality and supernatural world.

I’m Going Nowhere

‘I’m Going Nowhere’ is a fictional work based on the real-life experiences of Miriam Ateko, an African woman who lives in Europe and found out that she had tested HIV positive very shortly after moving there.

This news created a lot of fear, tension, denial, and even the risk of depression in Miriam’s life. The worst part is that she was subjected to discrimination from those whom she expected to be there for her.

Nevertheless, it is the story of resilience. Thanks to treatment and support from organizations, friends, and other people, Miriam managed to recover physically and mentally.

May to May - My Journey to Self-love with God

In ‘May to May - My Journey to Self-love with God’ the writer talks about the common problem that most people face but do not want to acknowledge - how to love oneself.

Comparison with others, inability to accept herself and detachment from her own life were all becoming too difficult for her to bear anymore. The moment she gave her life up to God, she was able to understand the worth she had in herself and embarked on a new journey.

Identification of twenty factors that make self-love possible changed her whole perception about herself.

The poems range from ancestral memories and politics to rituals and protests of survival. However, instead of focusing only on the past, the anthology asks us to remember and reflect on the experiences that made Africa.

The Hymns of a Deepman

The Endless Wars

The poem in ‘The Endless Wars’ is a powerful one because it captures the emotions of civil wars in South Sudan and humanitarian interventions in conflicts in different parts of Africa and the Middle East.

‘Kingdoms in the Heart of Africa’ narrates four kingdoms struggling for supremacy: Mbantuu, Utanne, Shanaba, and Manaka.

Inter-kingdom relations are defined by rivalries, political intrigues, and competitive dynamics. Shanaba is ruled by Queen Edonge, who is considered the African goddess, while the discovery of huge mineral wealth draws foreigners’ attention.
