Effects of the Coronavirus Pandemic on the Publishing Industry – How is the Book Industry tackling the challenge?

The Coronavirus pandemic really has changed the way in which the world is operating. With people only leaving their homes for exercise and buying necessary items, online shopping and home delivery have become the answer to most of our problems. But how is Coronavirus affecting the publishing industry? From distribution to marketing strategies, the book industry has been evolving to change.

Distribution

With major distributors operating on a restricted basis, or even closing down temporarily, the book industry impact has been apparent. Publishers are looking toward alternative book publishing plans. Orders and deliveries are still being fulfilled; however, deliveries are taking slightly longer than usual due to more customers resorting to online shopping and restricted staffing in the industry. But the good news is – our source of entertainment, reading! Is still being fulfilled.

Online platforms

Both independent and large chain book shops such as Waterstones, Barnes and Noble and Blackwell’s are all seeing a delay in getting their books out to customers and in mid-March, Amazon, had prioritised essential items. This news is only to be expected during the Coronavirus pandemic.

This news has encouraged the team at Austin Macauley to promote our own website even more, to let our customers know that they can still buy books directly from us during times of crisis and now at 30% off sitewide. We are therefore putting efforts into encouraging all of our customers to shop directly on the Austin Macauley website, as this ensures that your book will arrive at your door without any major delay as usual – perfect!

Marketing

With bookshops, libraries, schools and more being closed until further notice, we are ensuring that our book publishing plan is up to date with the changing times. Virtual events are now being hosted, which is an exciting opportunity for both authors and avid book readers alike to get involved from the safety of their homes.

Austin Macauley are standing together at this time, and we have ensured all of our authors that we are not letting the Coronavirus pandemic affect their current titles, or new book releases – the reading never stops!

E-Books vs Physical Copies

During the Coronavirus pandemic, audiobooks and eBooks are certainly a great way in which to satisfy your reading craving instantly. However, we know that many readers love to feel a physical book in their hands when reading! This is why we are currently offering 30% off on all paperback books on the Austin Macauley website to get you through the lock-down blues!

You can show your support for the publishing industry by getting involved in our #StayBookedStayHome campaign online! Let us know what you’re reading during lock-down on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or LinkedIn!
