World Storytelling Day: Keeping the Art of Storytelling Alive Through Books

World Storytelling Day is a global celebration of the art of oral storytelling. It is celebrated each year on March 20th. The World Storytelling Day is perfect for keeping the spirit of books alive in modern times. As a publishing house, Austin Macauley has been working on promoting storytellers from the UK and around the globe. For more than a decade, we have delivered numerous stories to the worldwide story lovers.

Storytelling tradition

Historically, storytelling was a great tool for mass communication, socialisation, and family bonding. It was a medium to create influence politically, and a gift to preach and educate. Storytelling was also used as a tool for propaganda.

"Great stories happen to those who can tell them." --Ira Glas

Although not as popular in current times, the art of storytelling still prevails in different forms. In modern culture, storytelling has provided a foundation for novels, TV serials, movies, and a lot of disciplines of media and mass communication. This year, the theme of World Storytelling Day is Light in the Dark, offering an opportunity to reflect on the power of stories in times of uncertainty and complexity.

Storytelling tips for writers:

Authors employ a variety of techniques to strengthen their stories. The following are some of the best storytelling strategies for authors.

Start with a powerful introduction.
The opening should grab the reader's attention right away. A question, an unexpected circumstance, or an unexpected moment can captivate readers.

Put character development first.
Reading about characters' growth and development is enjoyable for readers. Growth gives the narrative a realistic and fulfilling feel.

Make use of colourful settings.
Readers can better visualise the story's world thanks to the settings. Scenes can come to life when environments are described with minute details.

Gradually increase the tension.
Excellent storytelling builds suspense. Readers are kept interested in what will happen next by minor disputes and difficulties.

Instead of just telling, show.
Writers can depict emotions through actions, dialogue, and reactions rather than directly explaining them.

These techniques help transform simple ideas into powerful narratives.
