Q&A with Pyper Hancock
We caught up with Pyper Hancock for an exciting Q/A session, where she shares the story behind her enchanting creation.
Pyper Hancock is a New Zealand-born author and began ‘The Friendship Potion’ as a school project that later turned into a full book. When she’s not writing or drawing, she loves exploring malls with friends and reading anime graphic novels.
What inspired you to write a book about a friendship potion? Is it tied to any personal experiences or folklore?
My book actually started as a piece of schoolwork. We were asked to imagine the ingredients for a “friendship potion” and write down what makes someone a true friend. When I brought it home, my dad thought it had real potential and decided to take it further. With help from family on the artwork, his friends on the layout, and Austin Macauley as the publisher, the project grew into a real book that people can now read.
If you could brew your own magical potion, what would it do?
I would create a Creativity Splash Potion. It would turn every doodle into a masterpiece and give you endless ideas for art, stories, and projects.
What do you think is the special appeal of witches, magic, and potions around Halloween?
I think the appeal is all about the spooky fun and mystery. Cauldrons bubbling with potions, broomsticks, and spellbooks add to the eerie, spooky, and playful mood of Halloween.
What message do you hope young readers (or readers of all ages) take away about making and maintaining friendships?
I hope children read my book and see that real friendship takes kindness and effort. It’s about caring for one another and making sure your friends know they matter. I’d also love for people to think about their own friendships while reading the story.
As an author, do you have any favourite Halloween traditions or memories?
Trick-or-treating has always been my favourite. Dressing up as anything you want, walking around with friends, and ending up with a bag full of sweets is well worth the annual wait.
