Book Description

Finding herself under constant surveillance with repeated attempts upon her life, Thea Mar realizes that she has been outfitted with a tracking device that allows the government to pinpoint her location at every second and target her for torture and death. She has been secretly declared to be a domestic terrorist and targeted for criticizing the US government. Thus begins Thea’s trek through six countries to find and remove a microchip that was secretly inserted into her body before it kills her.

This story comes close to the author’s real life and has strong similarities to the experience of the former US Senate staffer who accused President Biden of sexual assault and fled to Russia for asylum in 2023.

The Cost of Truth draws from Packer’s diplomatic and congressional staffer roles, offering a disturbing picture of the roles of the key government agencies in protecting the image of the United States. The novel unveils the contradictions and abuses prevalent today, where the freedom of expression rights, guaranteed by the US Constitution, come into conflict with perceived dissent by the guardian agencies and the ramifications for the canceled.

Winsome Packer, a former American diplomat and congressional staffer, is presently a refugee in India, where she seeks asylum. Ms. Packer served as the representative of the Congress to the US Mission to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in Vienna, Austria, where she gained a first-hand view of contentious debates between Russia and NATO partners over critical security issues. As the first policy advisor for aviation security to the US House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee, she played an important role in shaping new policies to mitigate terrorist threats to commercial, private, and cargo aviation. A US presidential appointee, she served as an advisor to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in 2002. She is the author of A Personal Agenda.
