Book Description
I am Richard Magee and The Mood Swings is a story to commemorate some of the people I knew who suffered with me in the psychiatric services in the 1980s and 90s. I have largely recovered from my illness, but I know people who didn’t, some of whom are no longer with us. I suffer from schizophrenia, and in this book I’m trying here to share some of the highs and lows of life as a sufferer. The story dispels some of the myths associated with mental illness.
Know that we are not dangerous; we too have dreams, and we also feel. Some people in society think otherwise. Mental illness, be it depression or schizophrenia, is very debilitating to the sufferer. We have to live on a very small amount of money, and we are gravely misunderstood by the social order. People laugh at us sometimes. Others fear us. Neither of these perceptions is desirable, as we are struggling to make a life for ourselves in the 21st century. Mental illness affects about 4% of the population globally. It’s about time people understand and are not prejudiced against us.
