Babette is overjoyed to meet the mermaids, who are eager to learn the art of dance. But her excitement quickly turns to dismay when things take an unexpected turn. The mermaids, proud and egotistical divas, become jealous of one another, and their rivalry escalates into a chaotic fight.

How could such beautiful creatures transform into an ugly, warring force? Babette, unfairly blamed for the conflict, is sent away to face trial.

A delightful and magical tale about a courageous lake nymph Babette, who suddenly finds herself catapulted into the ocean after a massive volcanic eruption. On her adventures she meets a collection of weird and wonderful sea creatures , some real, some mythical and some positively evil ! It is beautifully written, full of whimsical humour but also with lessons to be learned. Each character is painted in vivid colours, making it easy for any child to conjure them up in their own imagination. There is a serious message too, about the state of our oceans when she visits the Aquatic Healing Centre, and is horrified at the effects caused by pollution in our seas. But swimming bravely through it all is our heroine, whose kindness, loyalty and sheer determination wins the day.

This charming story is full of mythical and unusual creatures, lake nymphs, ocean nymphs, an eagle, assorted sea creatures including some rather weird fish, a dolphin, mermaids, a merman and even a sea snail. It will certainly encourage children’s imaginations to run wild. In the midst of this watery fantasy world there are some very relevant modern day lessons to be learnt. Many of the sea creatures are in the underwater hospital having been harmed by humans polluting the seas with rubbish and chemicals.

Babette, a plucky young lake nymph, is swept out to sea and separated from her family following a terrifying volcanic eruption. Resilient, determined and endowed with a natural curiosity, she meets her predicament head-on and her spirit of adventure leads her to the deepest depths of the ocean where she accepts the daunting task of teaching the spiteful mermaids to dance. Young readers will be delighted to meet the new friends she encounters on her journey - Claude, the bottle-nosed dolphin and Peewee, the bright green luminescent snail - and together they must join forces with the Merman to to defeat the evil Medusa! This is an engaging tale, both humorous and at times nail-biting, which combines ancient myth and modern-day problems to produce a story which will captivate its audience, whilst showing them the value of true friendship and courage. I highly recommend!

Babette the water nymph escapes the huffing and puffing of grumbling mountain to find her self confronting the perils of the dark depths of the ocean. Her journey is fraught with contemporary challenges which she must face together with her new found friends. With a little help from magic and mythology this is a very gripping read indeed.

Babette is the youngest of the many nymphs that live in the lakes at the bottom of the mountains. When their neighbouring volcano starts rumbling and spluttering the nymphs run down to the sea caves for safety. Babette, ever the dreamer, delays her departure and, when the volcano erupts, she is hurled into the ocean by its force. She meets various sea creatures during her adventures, and along the way is railroaded into teaching the volatile mermaids to dance for a competition. Susana Brimlow has created a magical story that keeps you on the edge of your seat, anxious to find out what’s going to happen next. The book is aimed at 7-10 year olds, and I have no doubt that they will love this imaginative story that touches on topical issues like pollution, as well as friendship, loyalty and bravery.
