A Heartwarming and Honest Glimpse Behind the Magic at Disney World The Year of a Million Dreams by Steve Stanton offers an incredibly personal and engaging look at what it’s like to work at Walt Disney World Resort, a place that is often seen through the lens of visitors’ wonder and excitement. In this book, Stanton takes readers on a journey through his year spent working on the International Cultural Representative Programme, providing an authentic look at the challenges and rewards of living and working in a foreign country while being part of the magic of Disney. What I loved most about this book is how Stanton balances the magic of Disney with the reality of the experience. While Disney World is synonymous with fun and fantasy, Stanton doesn’t shy away from the more difficult aspects of the job—like adapting to a new culture, missing home, and dealing with the pressures that come with working in such a high-energy environment. The mix of lighthearted anecdotes and more serious moments gave the story depth and made it feel like a true behind-the-scenes peek into the life of a Disney employee. The book really captures the essence of what it means to create magical moments for others—from interacting with beloved Disney characters to making sure guests have an unforgettable experience. Stanton’s stories of making dreams come true for others were inspiring, but it was his personal growth throughout the year that really stood out i found myself rooting for him as he navigated the ups and downs of his year abroad, and by the end, it was clear that his time at Disney had impacted him in ways he hadn’t expected. The author’s writing is engaging and easy to follow, making you feel like you’re right there with him in the parks, having fun, facing challenges, and growing personally. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s really like to be part of the Disney magic, this book is a must-read. It’s not just a tale of working at one of the most famous theme parks in the world, but also an inspiring account of a young person stepping out of their comfort zone, meeting people from all over the world, and learning life-changing lessons along the way. Overall, The Year of a Million Dreams is both a fun and emotional read that offers a unique perspective on Disney World. Whether you’re a Disney fan or just someone who enjoys a heartwarming, honest story about personal growth and adventure, this book will leave you with a smile and a deeper appreciation for the magic behind the scenes.
This was an unusual read for me. Mainly because I like my reads with a dose of murder and a thrilling denouement. Usually if it doesn’t involve a decapitation or a speed chase, I’m out. However this was recommended by a friend and I decided my holiday read this year would be a welcome shift. Assisted by biographical photos throughout, this true story is one that gives an insight into the beauty of Disney and the team spirit of the people who get their year in the sun. It reminded me a little of those who go to the American summer camps. Structured in chapters, we first meet Steve when he is encouraged to sign up by his mum to travel from the UK to Orlando. We go through his interview, his journey there and subsequently the lead up to his graduation. It doesn’t end there though.
A lovely read, reminding me that Disney World is The Most Magical Place On Earth and Dreams really do come true. I was lucky enough to be a cast member along side Steve and this book remined me of all the memories that I made at Walt Disney World, and how anyone who visits or is lucky enough to work there will take something special away with them.
I absolutely loved this book. It describes American society at a real crossroads in changing culture seen through the innocent eyes of our protagonist. Atticus stands as the cornerstone of justice and ideals and provides a blueprint for everyone to model themselves on. He stands up for justice under the glooming shadow of violence and injustice. I love the dichotomy of the young protagonist, Scout and the enigmatic Boo (an elusive neighbour with a cauldron of rumours brewing about him). In their relationship, the young Scout acts older than her age with the much older Boo acting childlike at times when they eventually meet.
Hello! I'm a writer of thriller fiction who also published with AM. From one Disney fan to another, thank you for writing this. This book reads like it's written by someone who I could sit down and have a coffee with. Easy to read and follow - recommended for anyone who loves their Disney!

This book was a joy to read. The way the author engaged with the words, made me feel it was more of a conversation between friends . Steven’s recollection of his time at Disney, made me smile . Although not a Disney fan myself, I couldn’t help but get swept up in the awe, spectacle and magic of the place, through the eyes of someone so passionate about his experiences and his obvious love for all things Disney. The capture of Steven’s journey during his time working at the Magic Kingdom, is a must read.
I was lucky enough to be on the cultural representative programmes at the same time as Steve so I just had to get this book when I saw he had written about his time there! I read the book in one day…I just couldn’t put it down. It brought back so many memories of a fabulous time in my life. Every ex-cast member should read this…it’ll make you giggle and maybe shed a tear or two.
I had the pleasure to also be a cast member doing the ICRP, which is where I met Steven. This book brought back so many happy memories. To all past, present and future cast members of the ICRP this is a book that you need to read. I’m sure it will make you laugh and even remember the amazing year that we made some magic happen. Once a cast member always a cast member.
