Author and former prison chaplain Rev Joy Osborne joined Hannah on TRE in the Afternoon on Talk Radio Europe. Her appearance focused on her book An Inside Job: The Life of a Prison Chaplain. It shares stories from her time working at HMP Lincoln.
Published by Austin Macauley Publishers, the book gives readers a look at a world many people never see. Osborne writes about daily life inside the prison and the people she met there. She explains how she helped prisoners and staff when they needed support.
Her job often meant responding to a problem as it happened. Someone might need advice or help through a difficult moment. Others wanted to talk about their worries. Osborne listened and offered comfort. When people asked, she also prayed with them.
The book shares the hard parts of prison life, but it includes moments of humour too. Osborne looked beyond the crimes prisoners had committed and tried to understand the people behind them. Her accounts also show that prison staff need care and support.
Osborne has lived in Lincolnshire all her life. Before joining the church, she worked in retail and social services. She studied theology and pastoral care before becoming a chaplain at HMP Lincoln. Her experiences there later became the foundation for the book. Away from her work, she enjoys walking and visiting castles and historic houses.
