It tells the splendid tale of how a small group of great leaders such as Edmund Barton, Alfred Deakin and Samuel Griffith created a Federation of Australian States in 1901. Everald Compton has been meticulous in describing the events that led to the establishment of the nation when six self-governing British colonies joined together and became one nation—Australian nation. Written for casual readers as well as historians interested in the Australian history, this book narrates the story of the lengthy conversations held among the colonies for drafting and approval of the constitution, referenda in which common Australians registered their responses, the negotiations in London and finally with Queen Victoria. It also recalls how the political coup that removed Gough Whitlam as Prime Minister in 1975 almost destroyed everything that the Founding Fathers had achieved.
