Dr. Waring is the former professor and Head of Psychiatry at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. He was the president of both the Ontario and BC Psychiatric Associations. He was a resident at the Institute of Psychiatry in London and won a gold medal in psychiatry at the University of Toronto. Academically, he is known for Enhancing Marital Intimacy Therapy and the Waring Intimacy Questionnaire.
